The inhabitants of the Byzantine Empire (properly the Eastern Roman Empire) are the living embodiment of the Roman past coupled with Christian Orthodoxy. The inhabitants refer to themselves as Romans, using Roman Law and structures, but speak the Greek language. Pressed by the Turks, Italo-Normans and the Venetians, the empire has spies and diplomats at every court in the world.
