Coinage

There are 3 sorts of coins minted in the New World by the Kingdom of Nessex:

  • Copper Penny (cp): weighs 1/100 of a pound, worth 1/10 of a silver penny.
  • Silver Penny (sp): weighs 1/100 of a pound, worth 10 copper pennies or 1/10 of a gold mark
  • Gold Mark (gp): weighs 1/100 of a pound, worth 10 silver pennies.

In addition to these, there is a commonly found gold “coin” that comes from the Atlantean ruins, called the Atlantean Orb.

  • Atlantean Orb (ao): weighs 2.3375 pounds, of an unknown gold alloy. These orbs have an accepted value of 250gp each. Each is orb has a 6 inch diameter with a light-weight core of an unknown base metal surrounded by the gold alloy. Most orbs are covered with strange glyphs, and many of them radiate magic and those that radiate magic also radiate evil. What the magic power and evil effects of these orbs are is of yet unknown, part of the Mystery of the Atlantean Orbs

Items made of another precious metal, called Orichalcum, can be found in Atlantean ruins. While there are no “coins” as such of this metal, it's melt value is 10 times that of gold (thus 1 Load of Gold is 500gp, but 1 Load of Orichalcum is worth 5000gp). Orichalcum is very difficult to tell from bronze or brass sometimes, requiring a check at disadvantage with Appraisal or Alchemy, especially when made into a statue or figurine. An alchemical laboratory negates the disadvantage. The master smiths who can work wonders with this strange metal have their own, secret means of testing metals.
