 Curly is the lone survivor of a treasure hunting adventure gone wrong. Attacked by supposedly 'tame' natives, he survived  by hiding out in a cave and then building a raft and making his way to another island. He managed to grab the journal of his friend, the captain of the ship (he was first mate on this adventure).  Curly sports a wicked scar from the middle of eyes up to his left scalp, a reminder of a native axe-blow. The entire event left him with his current mocking sardonic cheer.
