Background: Maria grew up poor with her mother, never having any contact with her father whom her mother insisted was a member of the Cobblepot family. Despite raising a daughter on her own, Maria's mother never sought out the Cobblepot family for any sort of support or acknowledgement of her daughter's existence. Maria and her mother seldom talked about her father, but from what she could piece together before her mother's death Maria believes her father to be Patton Cobblepot.

Maria's young adult years were wasted in a haze of alcohol and debauchery. She spent quite a lot of time alone on the streets, even briefly resorting to prostitution for a time. Eventually, she made the decision to join the Catholic church and has made a real name for herself there as a hard-nosed defender of others who are young and vulnerable to the chaos of Gotham as she was.

Motivation: A lifetime living in the slums of Gotham has given Maria a first-hand view of the filthy underbelly of Gotham. The vulnerable are traded and consumed like any other commodity, with little regard for the humanity of those crushed underfoot. Despite having a name that suggests privilege, Maria rose from humble origins where to a station where she would do anything to make sure that these children are never harmed again. Once Mr. Cheavers offered her the resources to make that happen, she jumped at the opportunity and she's been working for him ever since.

Special Item: After informing the church about her decision to join the Gotham City Restoration Project, Sister Maria was given the gift of a custom habit with a quality sewn-in bulletproof vest by an unknown member of the church hierarchy.
