The Smedley's chain of successful discount department stores is a native Gotham business, specializing in inexpensive merchandise in large quantities for the average working family.   They are well-known for having a lunch counter just inside the entrance to their stores.  This lunch counter has free refills on coffee (not that it's great coffee) and kids get a free small bag of popcorn when they buy a hot dog.
