Shemp is a totally inept stumble-bum of a man.   He manages to get all sorts of jobs all over town, but rapidly gets fired from them in short order.   He recently was personal assistant to [[myrtle_may_breckenridge|Myrtle May Breckenridge]], but that didn't last long.  He is also a paid informant of the [[carruthers_detective_agency|Carruthers Detective Agency]] providing moderately useful information from time to time, for a moderate fee.
